KUMANOVO

The city of Kumanovo is located in the northern part of the Republic of Macedonia. It is located at the eastern foot of Skopska Crna Gora, in the eastern part of Kumanovo Field at an altitude of 330 meters. Located on the main traffic artery along the Vardar-Moravian valley, Kumanovo has a very good traffic-geographical position. As a traffic junction, in addition to the traced railway traffic, roads pass through it that lead to the east to Kriva Palanka and Kratovo, to the southeast to Sveti Nikole, to the north to the valley of South Morava and to the southwest to Skopje.

According to the legend, the name of the settlement originates from the name of the warlike tribe Kumani which in 1094. entered this area and for some time remained on the territory of today's Kumanovo municipality and beyond.

It is assumed that Kumanovo was founded in the XII century near the village of Zegligovo, in order to protect the crossing between the rivers Vardar and South Morava. The first source data for Kumanovo are the Turkish census books from 1519, in which the settlement is mentioned as a village within the Nagorichka nahija, which in turn was part of the Kyustendil Sandzak, with 52 families and about 300 inhabitants. It is mentioned as a city settlement (town) in the second half of the 17th century.

It is assumed that the settlement in this period has a poorly developed economy. This is confirmed by the travel notes of Evliya Çelebi from 1660, according to which the settlement had about 600 houses covered with tiles. He further says that the bazaar consisted of a large number of craft and trade shops and that there is a beautiful mosque in it, and the settlement itself was surrounded by many gardens, vineyards and a large number of mills.

In 1689 When the Austrians invaded the Balkans, the leader of the insurgents from the northern part of Macedonia, Karposh was proclaimed the "king of Kumanovo".

The city experienced economic development only at the end of the XIX century (agriculture, handicrafts and trade), but in the economic development there was no significant rise of the industry until the end of the Second World War.

Near Kumanovo, on October 23, 1912, the famous Kumanovo battle was held in which the Turkish forces were defeated by the Serbian army and were forced to withdraw from this territory. A monument was erected near the site called Zebrnjak, which would later be partially demolished by the Bulgarian army during World War II.

Today, Kumanovo is the third largest city in Macedonia and has a population of 70,842.

PROJECT

The Project was started in 2017,
Registrated to the Macedonian Copyright Agency in 2018,
Website https://macedoniafromabove.mk was officially opened in May 2019.

The main goals of the project are:

All locations are processed with 360° panoramas - from the air and from the ground, which are interconnected, with much additional text information, photos, videos and 360 ° videos ... in 2 languages: Macedonian and English (for now).
It currently has more than 2,000 panoramas.
The site is also ready for "virtual tours with a live guide".
90% of the materials posted on the site are with our own financial support.

This project is not funded by the Government of R. North Macedonia.

Church of Saint Nicholas

The Church of Saint Nicholas is one of the oldest buildings and is a cathedral church in the city of Kumanovo. Today's church was built in 1851, on the site of a small church, dug into the ground with nine steps, which also bore the name "Saint Nicholas". It is not known when the construction of this church dates back, but it is assumed that it is very old and that it follows the presence of the Christian population in this area.

The Church of "Saint Nicholas" was built by the famous master builder Andrea Damjanov from the village of Papradište, Veles. According to its spatial concept, this church belongs to the group of characteristic three-nave basilicas that Damjanov built whenever he was unable to realize a domed building. Thus, except for the church in the Osogovo Monastery, all previous buildings have the same or similar spatial - volume definition. Only after this building, and starting with the Osogovo church (both were completed in the same year), Damjanov will build mainly domed churches. The facade surfaces of the church are defined simply and cleanly, without decorative elements. Only the corners of the building are treated emphatically with beautifully carved stone in two colors, and as a finish on one of the upper stones a plastically modeled figure of an animal (ram, monkey, bird, etc.) appears.

The church is protected as a cultural monument.
