Cherry cannon is an artillery weapon whose body is made entirely of acacia or cherry. It has no significant combat value, since the wood explodes under the influence of the explosion after only a few shots. Such cannons were produced shortly before the Ilinden Uprising. The cherry cannon was important in encouraging and raising the morale of the rebels, and today it is a legendary symbol of the determination of the poorly armed rebels to oppose the far more powerful enemy for the freedom of their country.


Wooden cannons were most often made of wild almond and wild cherry, which were very strong, especially when dry. Care was taken to ensure that the knots, given that they provided even greater resistance and gave the wood strength, remained at the top or bottom of the cannon, where the pressure of the barrel was strongest. There were different ways of making the wood, i.e. the barrel of the cannon, and they were mainly used when there was enough time for it. The thickest and straightest logs of wood were used to make cannons. The log was hollowed out to form a tube. It was reinforced on the outside with metal hoops.


One of the reasons why wooden cannons exploded was that the cannon was not cleaned after firing, and then the next shot inevitably caused the cannon to explode. The range of these cannons was mainly 400 to 500 meters. The position for placing and securing the cannon was chosen mainly in prominent, elevated places that provided a good view of the object of the attack.


Most wooden cannons were made in the Krushevo region. There, seven cannons were made in the village of Selce, and six in Krushevo itself. Immediately before and during the Ilinden Uprising in 1903, a total of 17 cherry cannons were made in a period of two months. All wooden cannons had different dimensions. Their length was 80-150 centimeters, weight from 20 to 70 kilos; the caliber depending on the ammunition, mainly as many as a ball from a village scale or a bomb from the Bitola bomb factory, i.e. with a diameter of about 9 centimeters. To increase resistance, the cannons were reinforced with iron hoops.


In the preparatory period for the Ilinden Uprising, several wooden cannons were made. Among the first, on his own initiative, a cherry cannon was made by the monk Grigorij from the monastery of St. John Bigorski. In the village of Klenoec, Kichevo region, a wooden cannon was made 12 feet long. It was filled with nails and small pieces of iron. From that cannon, the rebels in the village on August 29, 1903, managed to fire four shots, after which the cannon exploded. In the village of Laktinje, Ohrid, by order of the Ohrid rebel headquarters, 18-year-old Trpe Danevski, together with two other villagers, made four cherry cannons in a short time. The length of these cannons was about 150 centimeters, weighing 70 kilos each. When they were hollowed out, the blacksmith Mustafa strengthened them with eight iron hoops. Then he made legs for them. The two better cannons were transferred to Izdeglavje near the large "mirdirnica", that is, the Turkish administrative administration and gendarmerie. The first charge and the first shot failed. During the second charge, the rebels packed the gunpowder well and instead of a cannonball, they put a ball from a cantar. When the fuse was lit in the lower end of the cannon, a loud thunder resounded, and the ball flew straight into the miridnica and pierced it. Panic broke out among the Turks and they fled. However, after several strong explosions, the cherry cannon exploded, and the same thing happened to the second cherry cannon.

The exhibition “Armed Band Rising to an Army” by the author, Bojan Trpevski, MA, was opened on August 15 at the National Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence. Through samples of weapons, photographs, documents and other materials, the exhibition will present the key stages of the process of creating the Macedonian armed forces – from the hayduk movement, through the insurgent companies and the detachments in the National Liberation Struggle to the creation of the Macedonian Army as one of the most important pillars of state sovereignty and independence.
