With the decision to join the anti-fascist coalition, Macedonia stood on the side of progressive humanity, and against fascism as the darkest ideology in modern history and the strongest negation of general civilizational and democratic values. The Macedonian people independently fought for their freedom. From the first partisan detachments that started the fight, the People's Liberation Army of Macedonia at the end of the four-year war grew into a well-organized 110,000 army with military formations of the highest rank as corps and divisions. During the occupation, in addition to the crimes committed by the occupiers against the innocent civilian population in Macedonia, the country suffered enormous economic damage. The crown of the struggle are the decisions of the First Session of ASNOM in 1944, which revived the centuries-old ideals of founding a Macedonian state.

_______
PRILEP
The city under Mark's Towers

Prilep is located in the northern part of the Pelagonija Valley, known as "The city under Mark's Towers" because of its proximity to the towers built by the legendary hero King Marko.

The city of Prilep and settlements in general in the area of the wider Prilep region, date back to antiquity, such as the archeological site Stibera, near the village Chepigovo. Near the city, traces of a prehistoric settlement were discovered on the Marko Towers.

In early antiquity, the settlement of Ceramie grew here, restored in late antiquity, which until the end of antiquity remained a rural settlement and did not grow into a city and episcopate.

Exactly in the city of Prilep, after the catastrophic defeat of Samoil's army in the battle of Belasica, in 1014, when he saw his blind soldiers, Tsar Samoil died of a heart attack. After Samuel's death, the city fell under Byzantine rule. In 1041 the Byzantine emperor Michael IV of Paphlagon suppressed the uprising of Peter Deljan, and the local duke Manuil Ivac tried to stop the Byzantine army at Prilep's Pletvar with a wooden palisade, but without success. Dobromir Hrs and his grandfather, Manuil Kamica, captured Prilep, but in 1202 Alexius III conquered the fortress again. The city remained under Byzantine rule until 1204, when Constantinople was conquered by the Crusaders. Throughout the 13th century, Prilep passed constantly into the hands of new masters - twice to the despots of Epirus, twice to Bulgaria, once to the emperor of Nicaea.

In 1334 Prilep together with the whole of Macedonia became part of the Serbian Kingdom, headed by Stefan Dusan. Important sources in that regard are the three Dusan charters - letters given to the monastery Treskavec. It is learned from them that Prilep at that time was a large and important city center and that Tsar Dusan had his own palace here.

In 1371 Prilep became the capital of the medieval Macedonian feudal ruler, Volkashin, who created the Prilep Kingdom, based in Prilep. After his death in the Battle of Maritsa (1371), he was succeeded by his son, King Marko (in folklore and stories, known for his supernatural powers and powers), who ruled Prilep until the death of the Turks until his death in 1395. and the wider region of western and southwestern Macedonia.

After the execution of King Marco at the Battle of Rovinj, Romania in 1395, the Turks took the city.

In the first half of the 16th century, Priille owned 321 houses.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, a large fair was held in the city, which was one of the largest in Rumelia and lasted 25 days. [7] Traders from all over the Balkan Peninsula came to the fair, and the most traded were: grain, tobacco, carpets, goods and others. In the 19th century, the city had 2,800 houses, 1,100 shops, 26 inns, 10 mosques and 5 madrasas.

During the First (1912-1913) and the Second Balkan War (1913) fierce battles were fought in and around Prilep. Such is the Battle of Prilep between the armies of the Kingdom of Serbia and the Ottoman Empire, in which the Ottoman army was defeated. The end of the wars was marked by the Bucharest Agreement, by which Macedonia was divided, and Prilep was utterly destroyed and devastated, as part of Vardar Macedonia will enter the Kingdom of Serbia.

In April 1941 Prilep fell under fascist occupation. On April 8 of that year, the German fascist army entered the city, and on April 26, the Bulgarian army entered.

On October 11, 1941, with the attack of the Prilep partisan detachment "Goce Delchev" on the Bulgarian police station, the anti-fascist popular uprising against the occupying power began. The city was liberated on September 9, 1944.
Due to the large number of fighters and victims that Prilep gave in the Second World War, the city received the epithet "hero city" after the war.

Treskavec
Monastery

Treskavec Monastery is located at an altitude of1280meters, among the rocksbelow Zlatovrv (1422 m). Within the monastery is the church "Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God". The monastery has its own lodgings and dining room. Elevated high above the rocks in the mountain, it gives a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains Baba, Babuna and Kajmakchalan, the plain Pelagonija, as well as the cities of Prilep, Bitola and Krushevo.

Until 2013, when an asphalt road was built to the Treskavec Monastery, it was said to be the most inaccessible and most hidden sanctuary in Macedonia, because it could only be reached by walking on a narrow, winding path that passes by incredible rocks and various karst forms. The Treskavec Monastery is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Macedonia and an important monastic and spiritual center of the Ohrid Archbishopric.

The first inhabitants of this area settled before our era, as evidenced by the remains of ancient walls and a large necropolis in which burials were performed during eight centuries, from the 4th century BC. to the 4th century AD The epigraphic monuments embedded in the monastery church and collected in the courtyard of the monastery reveal the name of the settlement, Kolobaisa, the cult center of Apollo and Artemis.

Treskavec Monastery is a single-nave building, with a three-sided altar apse to the east and side chapels, dedicated to the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God, built in the 13th century on the remains of an early Christian temple, which was rebuilt in the 14th century and donated by the Serbian Stephen II Tsar Dushan became the founder of the monastery after the victory over Byzantium in 1334. The Treskavec Monastery was built during the Ottoman rule over this area, in an architectural style that developed under the influence of Byzantine construction. The data for the construction of the medieval monastery with the church "Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God", unfortunately, have not been preserved. The only source that does not indicate its existence from the first half of the XIII century are the Treskavec Charters of Tsar Dusan, which states that the monastery was under the jurisdiction of the Ohrid Archbishopric, and it practiced Eastern Orthodox monasticism under the protection of Byzantine rulers. The mention of Dusan's predecessors, except in the charters, is preserved in the inscription above the front door of the monastery, where the figures of the rulers Andronicus II and Michael IX are painted. The whole scene was completely repainted at the end of the 19th century. The Serbian ruler Stefan Uros II Milutin is mentioned as a donor of the monastery, and later Tsar Dusan and his son Stefan Uros V. with plaster, and then painted on it the portrait of Stefan Nemanja.

The scriptorium in this monastery started its activity in the 14th century, and in the 16th century the work was intensified, and thus the monastery provided the surrounding churches with liturgical literature, and the monastery library with new books. The last books written by the hands of the feverish monks date from the first half of the 18th century, after which the spiritual life in the monastery began to cease. With the abolition of the Ohrid Archbishopric in 1767, the monastic fraternity shrank and the monastery fell into financial difficulties.

The dating of the monastery from the beginning of the XIII century is supported on the basis of the architectural construction of the church "Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God", which has been extended in several phases.

In the third decade of the 19th century, Abbot Visarion and the monk Ambrose built the covered part of the catholicon, and their figures were painted in one of the vaulted niches. Two decades later, in 1854, Dicho Zograf painted the figure of the hieromonk Samuel, one of the last monks to live in the monastery. From the second half of the 19th century, the care of the monastery was taken over by the priests from the surrounding villages.

Church "Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God"

The church dedicated to the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God is a monastery church in the monastery Treskavec. It is basically single-nave, with a nave domed by a dome and divided by pilasters at several ends. Externally, the altar apse is three-sided to the east. Beneath the deep layer of plastered walls of the northern chapel, frescoes dating from the 14th century can be seen. The porch with the two domed towers, located on the western part of the church, dates from this century. The frescoes in the church "Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God" consist of frescoes from different periods. The oldest are those on the walls in the space of the two towers, from 1334 - 1343, whose founder was Tsar Dusan. They illustrate the themes of the calendar and the saints presented in full size, followed by the verses of Christopher Mytilene. The frescoes on the former facade of the added chapel with the founding compositions, from which the figure of the founder, Gradislav's tomb, are painted, date from the middle of the 14th century. Immediately afterwards, the frescoes on the facades of the exonarthex were painted. In the central part of the northwest dome is painted the image of Jesus Christ as king of the heavens, the throne with the gospel on it, to the left of it the Virgin Mary and to the right King David. Around them is the holy army of the heavenly court of cherubim, seraphim, archangels and angels, and between the windows are presented eight holy warriors who here, in contrast to the usual where St. George or St. Dimitrij we have always been accustomed to seeing them dressed as soldiers, they are presented as nobles in beautiful robes of that time, again as part of the heavenly court. A marble statue of a Roman soldier in Heaton is embedded in the west wall of the upper zone. Christians, who did not assume it was anything special during the construction, used it as a building material. The Holy Apostle Paul in one of the epistles to the Romans addresses with the words "your statues will become ordinary stones", and here in the true sense of the word we have a Roman statue that becomes an ordinary stone used for construction.

The marble decorations embedded in the much older early Christian temple also contribute to the beauty of the present church. The monastery dining room from the 14th century with preserved stone seats and long stone tables with special recesses for the legs is especially impressive. Not that at that time they did not know how to make wooden tables, but people wanted to do something special for the Mother of God, and invested a lot of effort and money in processing the huge stone blocks, weighing more than two tons. In the dining room there are frescoes from the 17th and 19th centuries, under which are the remains of frescoes from the 14th century.

The Treskavec Monastery is the most visited during the holidays of Mala and Golema Bogorodica. Visited in the rest of the year, Treskavec is a place with a long history, which Prilep, traditionally, visited a lot in the past and now, and great interest in this cultural monument show people from all over Macedonia, as well as foreigners. On average, it is visited weekly by 40-50 tourists from all over the world - Japanese, Israelis, Europeans, adventurers and lovers of cultural heritage and nature.
