STRUGA

Struga is the second largest city, after Ohrid, located on the shores of Lake Ohrid. The lake flows into it and the river Crn Drim forms.

Struga is an old settlement that dates back to the Neolithic period. In antiquity, Struga was very profitable because it was located on the road Via Egnatia, which connected the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. Archaeological finds and excavated monuments say that life here dates back to prehistoric times. The first Neolithic settlement was registered around 3,000 BC. The ancient name of the city is Enhalon which means eel.

Roman rule ended in the fourth century. Then the Ohrid area was annexed to Epirus. Almost at the same time, the spread of Christianity in the Struga region begins. It is believed that the first Christian missionary in this area was Bishop Erasmus of Antioch. At that time, several churches were built here.

Later the settlement was named Struga.

The name of Struga derives from a pure and characteristic Slavic word. There are 2 explanations for the name:

According to the first folk interpretation, the name Struga comes from the open geographical position of the city: a place where the wind is constantly blowing.

The second is completely different: Once upon a time, the Macedonian Slavs (Brsjaci and Mijaci) in Struga were engaged in cattle breeding and at a specific time they trimmed the numerous sheep on shear (shearing wool) near the outlet (Mouth) of the Black Drim from Lake Ohrid. However, this can be much more logically related to the passage through a sheep milking fence, called a lathe (string, stringa).

Perhaps the closest to the truth is the explanation that Struga means a river sleeve, a tributary (in this case the outflow of the Black Drim) in a place with fishing equipment.

For the first time under the Slavic name Struga, the city is mentioned in an 11th century document. In another document from the 16th century (Kaliman's letter) an imperial charter is given "the income from the fish hunting ground of the city of Struga to be sent to the Zografski Monastery".

Throughout history, Struga was ruled by many rulers ... the Romans, the Slavs, the Bulgarian tribes, Tsar Samuel, the Normans, the Epirians, the Serbian kings, the Ottoman Empire ... Each of them in his own way left part of his culture in Struga. Like the history of Ohrid, the history of Struga begins with the Neolithic. Evidence of this can be found in the artifacts of the archeological findings of the famous archeological sites "The mouth of the river Crn Drim" and "Church meadows" in the village of Vranishta.

From the time of the Macedonian kings is a well-preserved bronze helmet found in the site "St. Ilija "near the village of Delogozda, which today is kept in the Struga Museum. From the time of the early Christian period, V-VI century, the basilicas in the village of Radolishta, the village of Oktisi and the village of Delogozda originate. It is clear that already in this period in Struga and Struga an intense life witnessed by the extraordinary workmanship of the found objects, by the lavish tombstones, by the pure artistic expression and above all, by the number of those persons who knew how to look for elements of real art in the utilitarian.

The mentioned early Christian basilicas in the villages of Oktisi and Radolishta are of special importance for the cultural history of Struga and the surrounding area. They are three-aisled, with a nave, narthex and baptistery (baptistery), and what makes them magnificent are the floor mosaics. There are basilicas of this type throughout the Balkans. Some of them are important because of their architectural solutions, others because of the mosaics and the other decoration, and third because of the architecture and decoration. However, basilicas with floor mosaics are not often found, which are such rare compositions: in the Oktishka in the narthex there is a composition representing the entrance to Paradise, and in Radolishka, in the nave - the central part of the temple, among other famous Christian symbols is the eel. , as a fish characteristic of Ohrid and Struga. And the fish in the early Christian period, as well as later, was one of the symbols of Christ.

The tradition of Saints Clement and Nahum is present in Struga and the surrounding area - for which there are several names of localities from this time: "Klimentica" in the center of Struga, especially the site "St. Bogorodica Prechista" in the village Vranishta which is a rarity not only in Macedonia , but also in the Balkans. From the Middle Ages, the oldest icon-painting work in Struga is the icon of St. George (1267), from the church of the same name. In Struga from the time of the Turkish period we would list: The hammam, which although it is of modest dimensions, contains all the elements of the hammams in Macedonia and "Halveti tekke", which is protected as a cultural monument.

From the time of the revival, numerous churches originated in Struga and the surrounding area, in all settlements with Christian populations. All of them are characterized by the famous special style in terms of architecture, especially with the rich and valuable carved iconostasis on which there are numerous "Throne" and "Festive" icons, and the interior of the churches is decorated with frescoes - frescoes. The most famous among the churches in Struga is the city cathedral church "St. "Georgia", with an outstanding carved iconostasis (completed in 1850), which also contains a rich collection of icons.
